FAQs
Bows and Equipment
St. Martins has bows and cases that archers can check out.
- Archers may take bows home.
- We have parts for the school bows and will repair them when necessary.
- For tournaments, we will bring all arrows and hand them out to archers.
- Practice arrows are provided at all practice sessions, and we prefer that personally owned arrows remain at home.
Archers may also use their own bows; they must be stock Genesis bows. Here is a link to the NASP bow.
These bows are available locally and online. Note that some local shops will tune them and offer lessons with purchase.
Tournaments
In mid-Missouri we are fortunate to have many tournaments. We usually have tournament opportunities every weekend from January through March. They are usually on Fridays, Saturdays, or both. Attendance at every tournament is not mandatory, but the more you attend, the better, as they offer the chance to qualify for the State tournament.
Tournament cost varies from $5 to $10. It depends on the tournament host. St. Martins athletics pays for a number of them, and we'll communicate those details.
For each tournament we register with our team roster. We will check with you to see if you're available that weekend and not out of town.
For each tournament there is a specified date/time when flight picking occurs. A "flight" is simply the time an archer shoots in a tournament.
When flight picking occurs, it is a free-for-all and we're competing with other schools for flight times. Unfortunately, this sometimes means we don't have many options for flight times. If we cannot make a date/time work for your archer, there is usually ample time to cancel and avoid a charge.
Your archer only has to be at the tournament for their flight. It usually takes about an hour, but we ask everyone to arrive 20 minutes before their flight time.
The dress code for tournaments is the uniform shirt and jeans. It is also best to wear the same or similar shoes as those worn at practice.
St. Martins hosted tournaments
We typically host two tournaments at St. Martins. We'll communicate those dates when they're set.
We're proud to be able to offer 520 flights at each tournament, including Friday evening and Saturday spots.
State Qualifying Scores
State tournament qualifications can be confusing, but here are the basics.
All archers must meet a minimum score in at least one tournament during the season to qualify for the State tournament.
Here are the requirements:
Bullseye:
| Division | Minimum Qualifying Score |
|---|---|
| Elementary (4th, 5th grade) | 200 |
| Middle School (6th, 7th, 8th grade) | 233 |
3D:
| Division | Minimum Qualifying Score |
|---|---|
| Elementary (4th, 5th grade) | 190 |
| Middle School (6th, 7th, 8th grade) | 230 |
To take an entire team (or teams) to the State tournament, each member must meet the individual scores mentioned above. We also need to receive a high enough "team score" at least once during the season. Team scores determine which "tier" we are in.
There are two types of tournaments: Bullseye and 3D. Bullseye team scores apply only to the Bullseye tier, and 3D team scores apply only to the 3D tier.
Depending on how the season goes, we could take both a middle school and an elementary team to State. NASP has special rules for smaller schools that allow elementary school archers to compete on a middle school team. Our goal is to at least qualify a middle school team, but it could include both middle school and elementary archers. In the last couple of years we've qualified both middle and elementary teams, which meant the majority of our archers could attend the State tournament.
The higher the team score we attain, the higher the tier we receive. Tiers are used when selecting the times and dates our archers shoot at the State tournament.
A higher tier gives us better spots. We typically aim to achieve at least Tier 2.
The team score is determined by summing the team's highest 12 individual scores, ensuring that at least 4 scores from both genders are included.
